Vocal synth pad

Vocal Architecture

A vocal synth pad is created by recording sustained vocal parts and processing them so they function like an ambient electronic keyboard pad rather than lyrical lines. The vocals are heavily reverberated, compressed, or tuned to blend individual voices into a continuous harmonic drone. This wash sits in the background of an arrangement to provide steady chordal accompaniment.

How the songs in the archive use it

In Sympathy for the Devil, repetitive backing vocals serve as a hypnotic pad or drone beneath the lead vocal and guitar solo. Drivers License applies heavy Valhalla VintageVerb, compression, and tuning to low-mixed vocal layers in the bridge to create a swelling harmonic synth wash.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Transform sustained vocal phrases into a lush, synth-like background drone using chorus and expansive reverb. Use this technique behind verses or ambient sections to fill harmonic space without clashing with the lead vocal.

  1. Record or import sustained vowel sounds, such as 'oohs' or 'aahs', across a chord progression on an audio track.
  2. Insert Ensemble on the track to diffuse distinct vibrato and smear the individual vocal takes into a cohesive choir.
  3. Insert ChromaVerb after Ensemble to generate a large, continuous ambient wash.
  4. Engage freeze on the reverb or dial in a long decay time to sustain the vocal bed continuously.
