Falsetto multitracking

Vocal Architecture

Falsetto multitracking involves recording multiple stacked takes of high, falsetto vocal parts and arranging them across the stereo field. These takes are often spread wide, compressed, and augmented with spatial effects or subtle pitch modulation. The resulting layers form a dense, hovering choral texture that provides harmonic lift above or behind the lead melody.

How the songs in the archive use it

The Night We Met by Lord Huron sends double-tracked falsettos through a Roland RE-201 Space Echo and plate reverb, while I Wanna Be Yours by Arctic Monkeys uses wide-panned, 1176LN-compressed stacks against baritone leads.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Layer multiple takes of soft falsetto vocals panned across the stereo field to create an ethereal, wide choir. Use this to lift choruses, build ambient vocal pads, or add delicate top-end sheen to a lead vocal.

  1. Record at least three separate vocal takes singing the exact same high falsetto line.
  2. Keep one take panned center and pan the supporting takes wide left and right in the Logic mixer.
  3. Route all takes into a Track Stack and insert Compressor to glue the levels together.
  4. Add ChromaVerb on a bus send to place the vocal stack into a shared, diffuse acoustic space.
