Formant shifting

Vocal Architecture

Formant shifting modifies the resonant acoustic frequencies that define vocal character independently of the actual musical pitch. Using specialized hardware or software, engineers can shift the perceived throat size and timbre of a performance to sound unnatural, synthetic, or distinctly transformed. This processing creates stylized leads, automated vocal textures, or surreal vocal chops that blur the line between voice and synthesizer.

How the songs in the archive use it

This is achieved using Logic Pro X's stock Vocal Transformer plug-in on bad guy by Billie Eilish, zero retune speed via Antares Auto-Tune Pro on STAY by The Kid LAROI, and slowed tape through an AMS DMX 15-80S on Queen's one vision.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Formant shifting alters the perceived vocal tract dimensions and tonal character of a voice without changing its musical pitch. Use it on vocal tracks to create gender-bent doubles, pitch-shifted textures, or modern vocal character effects.

  1. Select your lead or backing vocal audio track.
  2. Insert Vocal Transformer into an audio effect slot.
  3. Adjust Formant to alter the vocal tone while leaving Pitch untouched.

A general method with Logic Pro's own plug-ins. Control names are checked against Apple's manual; the values are starting points, so adjust them by ear.
