Vocal chops

Vocal Architecture

Vocal chops are short segments cut from recorded vocal tracks, which are then reordered, pitched, or formant-shifted into rhythmic hooks and melodic textures. These sliced phonemes and phrases are commonly loaded into samplers, triggered across keyboard ranges, or dynamically modulated with sidechain compression against rhythmic elements. The resulting audio blurs the distinction between human vocalization and synthetic lead lines.

How the songs in the archive use it

Closer keys sliced vocal formants to a kick drum with sidechain gain reduction during drops, One Dance pitches chopped vocal stems up three semitones, and Uptown Funk maps a recorded group phrase into a sampler for synthetic counter-melodies.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Slice vocal phrases into discrete segments and trigger them melodically from a keyboard. Use this to construct energetic vocal hooks, textures, or rhythmic ear candy.

  1. Drag a vocal audio region from the Tracks area directly onto an empty track header and choose Quick Sampler.
  2. Click Slice to map detected transient slices across the MIDI keyboard.
  3. Insert Pitch Shifter on the instrument channel strip to detune or shift the slices into key.
  4. Record a rhythmic MIDI sequence triggering individual slices.
  5. Adjust Pitch Shifter parameters to blend the shifted vocal artifacts smoothly into the arrangement.

A general method with Logic Pro's own plug-ins. Control names are checked against Apple's manual; the values are starting points, so adjust them by ear.
