Plate reverb

Spatial Staging

Plate reverb is an artificial reverberation method that routes audio into a suspended metal sheet, using transducers to vibrate the plate and pick up dense, metallic reflections. It generates a smooth, lingering decay that can range from tight and intimate to cavernous and expansive. The resulting wash adds depth, sustain, and spatial separation to individual instruments and vocal stems.

How the songs in the archive use it

The Night We Met by Lord Huron pairs an EMT 140 plate with a spring tank for guitars and a space echo for falsetto vocals, while Die With A Smile by Lady Gaga automates lush plates to widen arpeggiated guitars in the choruses.

How to do it in Logic Pro

This technique adds bright, dense artificial reverberation characteristic of suspended sheet metal. Use it on vocals, snares, or leads to introduce smooth spatial depth without muddying low frequencies.

  1. Create a bus send on your channel strip routed to an auxiliary channel strip.
  2. Insert ChromaVerb on the auxiliary channel strip.
  3. Load the Vocal Plate preset from the factory library.
  4. Adjust Predelay and Decay to match the tempo and space of your production.

A general method with Logic Pro's own plug-ins. Control names are checked against Apple's manual; the values are starting points, so adjust them by ear.
