Close miking

Spatial Staging

Close miking places a microphone inches or centimeters away from an instrument, drumhead, or singer's mouth to capture direct sound while excluding ambient room reflections. This setup captures deep proximity bass, transient detail, and subtle nuances like breath and rasps. Signals tracked this way are often gated or compressed to ensure a dry, upfront, and highly focused sound.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Close miking captures dry, direct sound while isolating the source from room acoustics. Use this method when recording vocals or instruments to maximize intimacy, transient clarity, and control over low-end proximity effect.

  1. Position your microphone between two and six inches from the acoustic sound source.
  2. Angle the capsule slightly off-axis to tame harsh plosives or aggressive pick attacks.
  3. Perform or record into an audio track in Logic Pro while monitoring levels to avoid digital clipping.
  4. Insert Channel EQ on the recorded track to clean up proximity low-end build-up.
  5. Insert Compressor immediately after the EQ to even out dynamic distance variations.
