Gated room reverb

Spatial Staging

This technique captures drums in a reflective acoustic room and abruptly cuts off the ambient tail using a noise gate. Microphones positioned to pick up the surrounding space capture the natural reverberation, which is then dynamically truncated before it can naturally decay. This produces an explosive, airy acoustic burst on each hit without cluttering the rhythm track.

How the songs in the archive use it

Common People uses stone room ambience gated with Drawmer processing to give the snare hits an explosive, punchy decay. On As It Was, heavily compressed and gated live drums tracked in a wood room contribute acoustic air alongside programmed samples.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Apply a dense room reverb to drums and suddenly truncate the decay using a noise gate. Use this on snares or ambient drum mics for a dramatic, classic 1980s explosive impact without long muddiness.

  1. Create an auxiliary channel and send the drum track to it via a bus.
  2. Insert Space Designer on the auxiliary channel to generate a reflective room ambience.
  3. Insert Noise Gate right after Space Designer in the channel strip.
  4. Adjust Threshold on Noise Gate until the reverb opens dynamically with each hit.
  5. Set Hold and Release to abruptly cut off the reverb tail before the next beat.
