Micro-pitch detuning

Spatial Staging

Micro-pitch detuning shifts audio signals slightly up and down by tiny cent values or uses LFO pitch drift to generate stereo width, thickness, or pitch modulation. This spreads backing layers and instruments across the stereo image without center comb filtering and can produce a chorus-like or vintage, drifting texture.

How the songs in the archive use it

Eventide H3000 units are used to pitch-detune backing vocals and harmonies on Disturbia, Candy Shop, and Cry Me a River for width, while Die With A Smile uses micro-pitch widening to expand clean guitars in the chorus. In Kill Bill, LFO pitch-drift is applied to synths and the lead flute melody to introduce cassette-like modulation that contrasts against the lead vocal.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Micro-pitch detuning thickens a mono or narrow sound source by introducing slight pitch offsets and modulation across the stereo field. Use it on lead synths, vocals, or guitars to add wide chorus-like dimension without heavy comb filtering.

  1. Insert Spreader on an instrument or vocal channel strip.
  2. Adjust Rate to set the speed of the subtle pitch drift.
  3. Adjust Intensity to control the depth of detuning and stereo movement.
  4. Dial Mix to blend the widened, detuned effect with the dry center signal.

A general method with Logic Pro's own plug-ins. Control names are checked against Apple's manual; the values are starting points, so adjust them by ear.
