FM synthesis

Production Signature

FM synthesis is a digital sound generation method that modulates the frequency of one waveform with another to produce harmonically complex, often sharp timbres. In studio production, it is typically sequenced via MIDI to deliver crystalline, metallic tones or layered over acoustic and sampled sounds to bulk up instrument textures.

How the songs in the archive use it

The Knife relies heavily on FM synthesis across We share our mothers health to give the arrangement a cold, metallic, biting texture. In Delilah, Queen layers FM and PCM synths with quantized drums behind Freddie Mercury's vocals, while Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men's One Sweet Day layers FM synthesis with acoustic piano and sample modules via a Synclavier and MIDI sequencing.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Generate complex harmonic sidebands by modulating one oscillator's frequency with another to create sharp, metallic, or crystalline textures. Use this technique when you need bright digital electric pianos, crisp mallets, or cutting basslines.

  1. Create a software instrument track and load Retro Synth.
  2. Switch Retro Synth to the FM synthesis engine tab.
  3. Play a MIDI pattern while balancing the modulator and carrier tones with the Mix slider.
  4. Increase the FM (Amount) control to add bright, metallic harmonic complexity.
  5. Adjust Harmonic/Inharmonic to dial in between consonant musical overtones and sharp, bell-like dissonance.
Plug-inControlValueListen for
Retro SynthFM (Amount)0.45crisp, glassy sidebands appearing over the pure sine wave
Retro SynthHarmonic/Inharmonic0.20defined, musical overtones without unpitched clashing
Retro SynthMix0.50an even balance between the fundamental carrier and complex modulator

A general method with Logic Pro's own plug-ins. Control names are checked against Apple's manual; the values are starting points, so adjust them by ear.
