Direct injection recording

Production Signature

Direct injection recording captures an electronic or amplified instrument by plugging its output straight into a mixing console, preamp, or direct box rather than placing a microphone on a speaker. This routes the instrument's electrical signal purely into the recording chain without capturing room reflections or acoustic bleed from other instruments in the room. It produces a clear, dry, and focused attack that can be used on its own or blended with acoustic microphones.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Direct injection recording captures an instrument's pure electrical signal directly into your audio interface without using a microphone or speaker cabinet. Use it to record clean electric guitars or basses with maximum clarity and flexibility for virtual amp processing.

  1. Connect the instrument output directly to an instrument-level (Hi-Z) input on your audio interface.
  2. Set the interface input level so the signal peaks without clipping.
  3. Create a new Audio track in Logic Pro and set its input to your interface channel.
  4. Insert Amp Designer on the track's Audio FX slot to shape the raw direct signal.
  5. Record-enable the track and perform the take.

A general method with Logic Pro's own plug-ins. Control names are checked against Apple's manual; the values are starting points, so adjust them by ear.
