Acoustic drum dampening

Production Signature

Acoustic drum dampening involves placing materials such as tea towels or cloth directly onto drumheads, sometimes combined with internal dampening, to reduce ringing and deaden transients. It is often paired with close miking, soft striking with mallets, or gating and compression to restrict room sound and sustain. This creates a dry, warm, and tightly controlled rhythmic punch that preserves space in an arrangement.

How the songs in the archive use it

The Less I Know the Better, fame, and Die With A Smile use tea towels and close processing to produce dry, room-free funk, disco, and soft-rock drum beats, while The Night We Met uses towels and yarn mallets to craft a pillowy, muted waltz groove.

How to do it in Logic Pro

This technique deadens drum ringing and transient sustain physically and sculpts the tight decay in the DAW. Use it to achieve a dry, punchy vintage or close-mic drum sound.

  1. Place tea towels or cloth over the acoustic drumheads before recording to physically attenuate sustained ringing.
  2. Insert Noise Gate on the recorded drum track to mute bleed and chop extraneous room resonance.
  3. Adjust Threshold until the gate opens only on direct drum impacts.
  4. Insert Enveloper after the gate to pull down sustained tail frequencies and sharpen transient impact.
