Sequenced bassline

Rhythm & Timing

A sequenced bassline involves programming repeating bass notes or ostinatos into an electronic sequencer or synthesizer rather than performing them live by hand. The pattern is locked to a specific grid or quantization, generating continuous, mechanical rhythmic drive and precise melodic repetition. This forms an unyielding low-end foundation that anchors drums and polyphonic elements across an arrangement.

How the songs in the archive use it

The Model by Kraftwerk employs a quantized eighth-note sequenced bassline to maintain a steady mechanical foundation, while We share our mothers health by The Knife drives its groove with a syncopated 16th-note sequence against a four-on-the-floor kick. Candy Shop by 50 Cent uses a Phrygian synth ostinato sequenced on a Korg Triton through Neve 1073 preamps as the main melodic hook.

How to do it in Logic Pro

This technique programs repeating synthetic bass patterns tightly aligned to the grid for relentless rhythmic momentum. Use it to establish the driving pulse in dance, synthwave, or electro productions.

  1. Create a software instrument track and insert the ES M synthesizer.
  2. Select an octave range by pressing the 16 button to seat the oscillator in bass register.
  3. Create an empty MIDI region and program a continuous sixteenth-note groove in the Piano Roll.
  4. Quantize all MIDI note starts and durations to 1/16 to ensure a strictly mechanical timing.
  5. Shape Cutoff, Decay, and Resonance on ES M to deliver a punchy, percussive bass pluck.

A general method with Logic Pro's own plug-ins. Control names are checked against Apple's manual; the values are starting points, so adjust them by ear.
