Quantized acoustic drum looping

Rhythm & Timing

Quantized acoustic drum looping involves recording a live drum kit performance, editing the audio into individual hits or phrases inside a digital audio workstation, and aligning those slices rigidly to a rhythmic grid. The corrected sections are then looped continuously throughout the song. This fuses the natural timbre of real drums with the strict, unyielding timing characteristic of drum machines.

How the songs in the archive use it

This Love applies this process by chopping Ryan Dusick's acoustic drum tracks in Pro Tools and heavily quantizing and looping them, creating a tight, repetitive pocket akin to hip-hop and R&B rhythms.

How to do it in Logic Pro

This technique slices recorded acoustic drums into rhythmic segments and triggers them from a rigid grid for a tight, sampled breakbeat feel. Use it to inject organic acoustic drum textures into rigid electronic productions.

  1. Drag your recorded acoustic drum audio file directly into the Tracks area header to create a new Quick Sampler instrument track.
  2. Click the Slice button to divide the drum performance into transient slices.
  3. Set Mode to Transient and adjust Sensitivity until every hit receives an individual slice marker.
  4. Right-click the sample display and choose Create MIDI Track to generate a sequence of chromatically ascending trigger notes.
  5. Quantize the resulting MIDI notes to a 1/16 note grid in the Piano Roll and loop the region across the arrangement.
