Drone note

Harmonic Structure

A drone note is a sustained or persistently repeated pitch or chord that runs continuously beneath changing melodies and harmonies. By remaining anchored to a single tonal center without traditional chord progressions, it creates an underlying harmonic bed that generates continuous tension. This anchors the arrangement and emphasizes rhythmic riffs, vocal deliveries, or solo instruments performing above it.

How the songs in the archive use it

Yellow by Coldplay, Dear Prudence by The Beatles, Warrior on the edge of time by Hawkwind, Searchin' by The Coasters, and Smokestack Lightning by Howlin' Wolf use continuous pedal tones, bowed bass, fingerpicked figures, or single-chord verse grooves to anchor their arrangements.
