Tape wow and flutter

Studio Trickery

Tape wow and flutter refers to the pitch instability caused by irregular tape movement across a machine's transport and playback heads. Low-frequency fluctuations produce slow pitch wavering, known as wow, while higher-frequency variations create rapid fluttering. Musicians and engineers exploit these mechanical imperfections—or emulate them through dedicated hardware delays, modulation, or software plugins—to introduce detuned, lo-fi character and detached ambience to clean instruments.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Simulate mechanical tape transport instability by modulating pitch using LFO and flutter settings. Use it on synth pads, guitars, or retro instruments to create vintage analog chorus and warble.

  1. Insert Tape Delay on the target audio track.
  2. Turn off Tempo Sync and set Delay Time to zero.
  3. Set Feedback to minimum and turn Dry/Wet fully wet.
  4. Increase LFO Intensity for slow wow and adjust Flutter Rate/Intensity for faster transport warble.
