Sub-bass harmonic saturation

Spectral Pocketing

Sub-bass harmonic saturation applies drive, distortion, or valve clipping to low-frequency elements like kicks and synth basses. Generating overtone harmonics in the upper bass and midrange makes low-end fundamentals audible on smaller speakers while maintaining low-frequency weight. The added harmonics also provide aggressive bite and anchor dense rhythm sections without turning the low end muddy.

How the songs in the archive use it

Tracks like I Wanna Be Yours, Starboy, and Heat Waves saturate Roland TR-808 sub-bass elements through devices like SansAmp distortion or discrete saturation to generate upper midrange presence, while Kings of Speed drives a Marshall 1992 Super Bass head into power-valve clipping to give an eighth-note bassline cutting top-end bite.

How to do it in Logic Pro

Sub-bass harmonic saturation generates upper overtones from low frequencies, improving clarity and audibility on smaller playback devices. Apply this to sub-basses or 808s that disappear on phones and laptops.

  1. Insert ChromaGlow on your sub-bass channel strip.
  2. Select an analog saturation Model to generate upper overtones.
  3. Turn on Low Cut or High Cut to shape the bandwidth of the drive processing.
  4. Increase Drive until the bass notes become clearly audible through the midrange.
  5. Blend Mix to retain the original sub fundamental alongside the harmonic overtones.

A general method with Logic Pro's own plug-ins. Control names are checked against Apple's manual; the values are starting points, so adjust them by ear.
